Green Teas: |
| In the twelfth century, the Japanese monk
Eisai stressed the beneficial effects of tea in his book, Maintaining
Health by Drinking Tea (1211): "Tea is a miraculous medicine for the
maintenance of health. Tea has an extraordinary power to prolong life.
Anywhere a person cultivates tea, long life will follow. In ancient and
modern times, tea is the elixir that creates the mountain-dwelling
immortal." From this passage we can see that green tea has from early times
been highly valued as a powerful medication. But in recent years research
into the effects of green tea has progressed to the point where scientific
confirmation can be provided for the legendary saying that "Tea is a
miraculous medicine for the maintenance of health."
Made from the dried leaves of the camellia sinensis
plant, Green tea came from China between 4,000- 5,000 years ago. The story
goes that an ancient Chinese Emperor was boiling water and some leaves fell
into his pot. Now, green tea is popular all over the world, not only as a
refreshing beverage, but also for its many health benefits.
There are three types of tea Black, Oolong, and Green
tea. The difference between Green tea and the others is that green tea is
not fermented, thus keeping in the powerful antioxidants lost in the
fermenting process. Green tea also contains polyphenols such as tannins (a
nutrient antioxidant) catchins (EGCG which is a powerful antioxidant), and
flavenoids, as well as other vitamins and minerals, such as Vitamin C. The
antioxidants help your body fight against free radicals, which can mutate
cells and cause illness.
Here are just a few known health
benefits of drinking green tea:
- Boosts your immune
system
- Helps prevent
cavities and tooth decay
- Slows the aging
process
- Helps reduce the
risk of cancer
- Lowers cholesterol
- Aids in weight loss
by burning calories
- Reduces high blood
pressure
- Prevents arthritis
- Reduces the risk of
heart disease and stroke
